What caused World War 2?
Claim: The domestic and foreign policies and events that led to WW2 were Hitler and the Nazi party coming into power- due to the Treaty of Versailles, Japans attacks/invasions, the rise of fascist dictator Mussolini and U.S.'s evasiveness to neutrality.
Evidence:
1) "...that she [Germany] will make compensation for all damage done to the Civilian population of the Allied and Associated Powers."
Source: Treaty of Versailles 1919
2) "1931 Japan invades Manchuria."
"1931 Japan attacks Shanghai."
"1937 Japan invades China- The Rape of Nanking"
"1941 Japan attacks U.S. through Pearl Harbor- Dec. 7th"
Source: Class Timeline
3) "1922 Mussolini took over Rome/ was appointed prime minister/ invades Ethiopia and Abyssinia"
Source: Class Timeline
4) "1935 USA passes neutrality acts"
"1937 Cash 'n Carry"
"1940 USA limits oil to Japan"
"1940 FDR enacts draft bill"
Source: Class Timeline
Reasoning:
1) After WWI, Germany was broken. Hitler decided he would ignite a nationalistic fire in the public's opinion, saying he will get Germany out of all the mess that the Treaty put them into, Germany's nationalism helped Hitler and his Nazi party become the strongest party in Germany, and a threat everywhere else, making them a powerful nation in WW2, but not powerful enough.
2) While Japan seemed peaceful for a while, its invasions in Manchuria, Shanghai, and The Rape of Nanking molded their reputation because the Rape of Nanking was ultimately hell on earth for the Chinese caused by the Japanese. Japans abrupt attack on Pearl Harbor also helped spark USA's coming into the war.
3) Italy's new fascist dictator- Mussolini- helped Italy take over Rome. This has been seemingly impossible for others because of Rome's great power because of how old it was. This helped Italy become part of the Axis powers.
4) While USA has been saying it wanted to stay away from any European conflicts, this evidence tells us otherwise. Because we had ties with Britain, we needed to help them out, so we passed a draft bill and neutrality acts.
Final Statement: Hitlers great influence, Japan's abrupt and brutal invasions/attacks, Italy's rise of power and fascism, and USA's elusive policies were just some of the events and policies that led up to WW2.
