Today, we had to read about the 3 meetings that won the war and changed the world: Tehran, Yalta, and Potsdam. We had to read about them in a packet that we picked up on our way in, and then filled out a Venn Diagram sheet connecting all three of the conferences. I learned that the Tehran conference involved Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill, it was from November 28-December 1st, it's purpose was to implement agreements made at the Yalta conference, and to knock out Germany first before taking out Japan... also U.S. would start in North Africa. Next came the Yalta conference, which involved Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt and it was from February 4 to 11, 1945. Joseph Stalin wanted to punish Germany completely, so that they couldn't start another war. This conference was to decide what would happen around the world, post-war. After this conference, the United Nations formed. This 'United Nations' which was a better version of the League of Nations. Also, Stalin promised free elections. Last but not least was Potsdam, which involved Truman, Stalin, and Churchill, and was from July 17 to August 2, 1945. This conference decided to demand Japans unconditional surrender... but Japan denied because they wanted to save their precious emperor. And even though Stalin promised free elections back at the Yalta conference, he broke his promise during the Potsdam; there would be no more free elections. All 3 of these conferences all have to do with WW2 strategy- pre-war and post- war, involved the Allied Powers, and all conferences involved Stalin and Churchill.
After filling out the Venn Diagram, the class was assigned a project. Each pair of partners would choose to research 4 battles from WWII- 2 from the European Theater and 2 from the Pacific Theater. My partner and I chose to research Stalingrad and D-Day aka the Battle of Normandy for the European battles and Iwo Jima and Midway for our Pacific battles. In the next coming days, we will have to fill out information on these battles which includes the following: key players, events/significance, victors, and location.
